History at a glance
The history of Trinidad and Tobago begins with the settlements of the islands by Amerindians. Both islands were discovered by Christopher Columbus on his third voyage in 1498. Tobago changed hands between the British, French, Dutch and Courlanders, but eventually ended up in British hands.
Trinidad remained under Spanish rule until 1797, but it was largely settled by French colonists.
In 1888 the two islands were incorporated into a single crown colony. Trinidad and Tobago obtained its independence from the British Empire in 1962 and became a republic in 1976.
Bacolet Beach Club
The
Bacolet Beach Club is an exclusive boutique Hotel, Restaurant and bar where its owners have created a stylist retreat. This delightful hotel shares a commitment to luxury and personal services, while its intimate size encourages a particularly warm and friendly atmosphere.
The Bacolet Beach Club, developed by former fashion model
Gloria Jones-Knapp, is a deliberately restful and luxurious property enjoying an idyllic crescent-bay setting on an island blessed with exceptional natural beauty and charm. The oriental inspired wooden roofs of the Bacolet Beach Club mingle among lush foliage of bamboo and bougainvillea, and lies only two minutes away from the island’s capital, Scarborough, and only 15 minutes from Tobago’s airport.
Bacolet Bay has been known for years as a perfect hideaway. The area has been also the backdrop for many Hollywood movies of the Grande Era, e.g. Fire Down Below with Robert Mitchum and Rita Hayworth or the movie classic Swiss Family Robinson.
The atmosphere is serene as you gaze from one of the bay suites, or from the overflow horizon pool, which overlooks the beach with wooden decks – ideal for sunbathing and socializing.
Tobago is one of the prettiest islands in the world, its rocky covers and pink carol or brown sand beaches perfectly complemented by its luscious vegetation and its rainforest. This is a picturesque island just begging to be explored!
Tobago is also classed one of the world’s top diving sites, with beautiful reefs and a rich underworld sea life. Two 18-hole golf courses make the island attractive for many golf enthusiasts.
